Rough Edge Cartography
The series Rough Edge Cartography is a series of abstract works initiated in 2023. It consists of acrylic paintings on grounded and some on natural canvas.
The idea behind the art series, is an exploration of the theme of migration; both in terms of tracing migration and its symbols, but also the motivation behind migration. Exploring the theme of migration, the series delves into the symbolism and motivations surrounding movement. Migration, in its various forms—be it human, economic, or even data migration—has been a focus in my recent artistic endeavours.
Within the Rough Edge Cartography series, I focus on constructing imaginary maps defined by rough line or border. Maps play a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of place, destination, and relative space. They facilitate migration and exploration. These abstract maps, born from imagination, aim to portray a cartography of the mind. The rough edges and borders serve as a framework, directing focus and providing a sense of guidance for journeys of discovery. This deliberate inclusion of borders introduces a geometric element, creating a dynamic interplay between spontaneity and structure within the artwork. This tension reflects the intricate relationship between the organic forms of the maps and the geometric rigidity of the borders.
