Within These Walls

Within These Walls is a series of abstract paintings created with acrylic on canvas. The series is a reflection of the role of space, limitations, and impulses in a minimalist manner. The series was made under the assumption, that reducing noisy or distracting elements, it allows one’s mind to wander.
The formal composition throughout the series consists of three levels:

1. Background – “boulders” or heavy structures, a reference to memory and the foundation behind every experienced-based action.

2. Middle ground – frames, geometric shapes, or formal structures, a reference to boundaries, rules, limits, and framework of the spaces we experience or conduct ourselves within.

3. Foreground – free and more spontaneous structures, a reference to impulse, instinct, and improvisation in the present.

The backgrounds comprise of constellation of solid boulder-like structures. The middle ground displays an arrangement of geometric frames or enclosed spaces. The foreground comprises of more unprocessed impression or impulsive structures. Together, the three levels are meant to give a sense of being and experiencing. We can only see the world through our own eyes, meaning; we understand the world through what we know, we can only act according to our physical and mental limitations, and only then, are we free to act spontaneously.

The intention with Within These Walls, is to formulate the different physical and mental spaces we operate within. Within These Walls is a way of overlapping experience, boundaries, and impulses. It deals with the notion, that we can only really see the world from our own vantage point; from the windows of our home, and our own eyes.

Within These Walls is a sub-series under the overall theme Spontaneous Structures/Structured Spontaneity, which I have been working on since 2015. It’s an investigation of the relationship between structure and spontaneity, rules and freedom, uniformity and uniqueness, as a universal force of being, thinking, and acting.
